A typed note on the back of the frame by Virginia Browne-Wilkinson reads 'Harry Furse sketched Ethel Dolignon on the back of a scrap of paper on which he had drawn some horses' heads in ink, and one of these beasts gives the impression that she has a puff of smoke ascending from the tip of her nose.
