Framed pencil portrait of Ethel Dolignon by John Henry Monsell Furse. A typed note on the back of the frame by Virginia Browne-Wilkinson reads 'Harry Furse sketched Ethel Dolignon on the back of a scrap of paper on which he had drawn some horses' heads in ink, and one of these beasts gives the impression that she has a puff of smoke ascending from the tip of her nose. He sent the sketch to his sister Mary in a letter he wrote to her soon after becoming engaged to Ethel, in 1882. Mary's granddaughter [Virginia Browne-Wilkinson] found it in the letter, and gave it to Harry's granddaughter, in 1983'. With a further handwritten note 'For Theresa [Whistler] from Virginia with very much love & gratitude'.

Round metal, wood and glass frame (glass cracked). Diameter: 13cm.
