Abstract

Papers of the Newbolt and Furse families, mainly of Sir Henry Newbolt, Margaret Newbolt (née Duckworth), John Henry Monsell Furse, Sir Ralph Furse and Celia Furse (née Newbolt).

Biographical / Historical

Sir Henry John Newbolt (1862-1938) was a poet and writer. In 1889 he married Margaret Edina Duckworth (b. 1867/8), fourth daughter of Rev. William Arthur Duckworth of Orchardleigh, Frome, Somerset. The Newbolts had two children, Margaret Cecilia 'Celia' (1890-1975) and Francis (1893-1966). For further details about Sir Henry Newbolt see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Celia Newbolt married Sir Ralph Dolignon Furse (1887-1973), colonial administrator, in 1914. He was the son of the sculptor John Henry Monsell Furse (1860-1950). The Newbolts had four children, Barbara Dolignon 'Jill' (1915-1944), Patrick John Dolignon (1918-2005), Nicolas Ralph Dolignon (1925-2007) and Theresa Thomasin Dolignon (1927–2007).
