Strachey made the trip in order to attend the Association for Computing Machinery Conference, 19-21 June 1957, in Houston, Texas. While in the US he also visited the Lincoln Laboratories of M.I.T., the I.B.M. Laboratory at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the University of Illinois, the Remington Rand Laboratory in Philadelphia and Bryn Mawr College.
