Abstract
Manuscripts collected by Edward Rowe Mores, relating to the Queen's College, Oxford, 18th century.
Biographical / Historical
Edward Rowe Mores (1731-1778) was an antiquary. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
Other Finding Aids
Falconer Madan, et al., A summary catalogue of western manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford which have not hitherto been catalogued in the Quarto series (7 vols. in 8 [vol. II in 2 parts], Oxford, 1895-1953; reprinted, with corrections in vols. I and VII, Munich, 1980), vol. V, nos. 28037-28046.
Custodial History
After Mores's death in 1778 the manuscripts came into the hands of Thomas Astle (d. 1803) who gave them to Dr. John Price, Bodley's Librarian, in whose possession they were in 1790.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
As they appear in the Gough Catalogue published in 1814 as in the Gough collection, it seems that Dr Price handed over the volumes to the Bodleian before his death in 1813, probably in 1809 when the Gough books themselves came.
