Biographical / Historical
The Bertie family became Earls of Abingdon in 1682 after King Charles II created the peerage for James Bertie, Lord Norreys of Rycote. The Bertie family have been been prominent land owners in Oxford and surrounding areas and feature heavily in the political history of Oxford and England.

The archive came to the Bodleian Library at several different dates from several different sources. MS. Top. Oxon. b. 121 was bought from the executors of F.P. Morrell in 1925. MSS. Top. Berks. b. 12, c. 34-38, d. 25-26; Top. gen. c. 43-45, e. 63-64, Top. Oxon. c. 334; Rolls Berks. 11-37, 39, Rolls Oxon. 141-147, 150, Ch. Berks. 827-887, Ch. Bucks. 827-831, Ch. Oxon. 3822-3874, Ch. Som. 81 and Ch. Wilts. 327-334 were bought from the Countess of Abingdon, through E.H. Tipping in 1934. MSS. Top. Berks. b. 13, Rolls Berks. 41-44, Rolls Oxon. 158-164 and the maps were bought from E.H. Tipping in 1936. MS. Top. Berks. e. 21 was given by J.C.B. Gamlen in 1942. MSS. Top. Berks. a. 5, b. 16-39, e. 22; Top. gen. b. 63, c. 88-89; Top. Oxon. a. 46-47, b. 177-193, b. 196-216, c. 381-389, d. 378-380, d. 621-623, e. 299-303; Ch. Berks. 1128-1148, Ch. Lincs. 1379, Ch. Bertie c. 29-35, d .4 were deposited through the British Records Association in 1970. MS. Top. Oxon. b. 262 was given by A.A. Bertie in 1971.
