A long treatise by Adam Zernichaüs (Zoernikav) on the controversy between the Eastern and Western Churches about the Procession of the Holy Ghost, the author upholding the Eastern position of the sole procession from the Father. The work was printed in Latin at Berlin in 1774, and in Greek at St. Petersburg in 1797.

The MS. is divided into nineteen smaller 'tractatus' at pp. 1, 240, 292, 342, 394, 458, 484, 504, 558, 585, 613, 635, 675, 693, 705, 869, 912j, 957, 1003, but their titles, after the first two, are omitted.

Eleven scribes wrote the volume, whose work and remuneration are recorded in the autograph of each on pp. 1055-1056, as follows:

  1. Samuel Herberth, pp. 1-108 (3 fl. 24 [kreutzers ?]);
  2. Johannes Fabri, pp. 109-221 (3 fl. 36 kr.);
  3. Martinus Schulerus, pp. 222-335 (3 fl. 33 kr.);
  4. Thomas Roth, pp. 336-439 (3 fl. kr.);
  5. Johannes Weis, pp. 440-547 (3 fl. 12 kr.);
  6. Johannes Adami, pp. 548-654 (3 fl. 10 kr.);
  7. Johannes Wohl, pp. 655-748 (2 fl. 73 kr.);
  8. Georg. Henneg, pp. 749-800 (84 kr.);
  9. Johannes Fritsch, pp. 801-848 (43 kr.);
  10. Johannes Colbius, pp. 849-942 (3 fi.);
  11. Georgius Gusbeth, pp. 943-end (3 fl. 24 kr.).

Michael Eckhard also received 'Leones duos' for correcting the book, see p. 1053. 'Scapos chartarum 24 plagulae const, à d[eniers ?] 48 fl. 3.//.84. Summa omnium expensarum Ung[arisch ? or Ungefähr ?] fl. 38.//. 46.' This seems to represent the sums paid by Chrysanthus to have a copy made (μεταγραɸή, rescriptio) of the Latin original which he saw in the house of Barlaam archbp. of Kieff, but whether this copy was made at Kieff or, as seems more probable, made later, in about A.D. 1715, is not clear.

Abstract

A long treatise by Adam Zernichaüs (Zoernikav) on the controversy between the Eastern and Western Churches about the Procession of the Holy Ghost, written in about A.D. 1715.

Biographical / Historical

Adam Zernichaüs [Zoernikav] (b. 1652) was a theologian and jurist.

Other Finding Aids

Falconer Madan, et al., A summary catalogue of western manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford which have not hitherto been catalogued in the Quarto series (7 vols. in 8 [vol. II in 2 parts], Oxford, 1895-1953; reprinted, with corrections in vols. I and VII, Munich, 1980), vol. V, no. 27665.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Originally acquired in 1722, was re-purchased in 1864:

This MS. has had a curious history. Chrysanthus, Patriarch of Jerusalem, commissioned sir Robert Sutton, in May 1715, when both were at Constantinople, to present the volume to the University of Oxford (in the hope it might print the work) through dr. Arthur Charlett, Master of University college. A copy of a letter from the Patriarch to the University in Greek (with a Latin translation), May 1715, which gives some account of Zernichaüs, and also a copy (by Charlett) of part of one from sir R. Sutton to dr. Charlett, Sept. 30, 1715, precede the text. The original letter from Sutton is in no. 10797, fol. 100. Charlett received the letter in June 1716, but perhaps retained the volume till his death, in 1722, as it is entered in the Benefactors' Register under that year. The Library records state that 'this was restor'd to Sr Rob. Sutton by Order of Mr Vice-Chancellor in 1731': no doubt a book impugning the Filioque clause in the Athanasian Creed was not valued highly by the University. At last in Dec. 1864 it was bought from C. J. Stewart, the London bookseller, and has regained its ancient place.
