Fair copy by an amanuensis of the treatise by John Rainolds (1549-1607), entitled 'A defence of the judgement of the reformed churches, that a man may lawfully not only put away his wife for her adultery, but also marry another', with marginal references and notes in the author's hand. A lengthy note on fol. iv, initialled 'J. B.', states that the manuscript was found in Rainolds's study at his death, and that Rainolds intended to publish this version of his work. The Defense published in 1609 is from a copy of an earlier version of the text.
