Biographical / Historical
Born 30 Sep 1883. Died 24 Nov 1953.
Professor Lightfoot was the Ireland Professor of Exegesis of Holy Scripture, Oxford University, 1934–1949, and Professor Emeritus from 1949. He was also a Fellow of New College, Oxford, 1921–1950, and became a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1950.
His education consisted of Eton (Scholar); Worcester College, Oxford (Exhibitioner); Bishop’s Hostel, Farnham. 1st Class Theological Honours, 1907; Liddon Student, 1907; Senior Greek Testament Prize, 1908; Senior LXX Prize, 1908.
Lightfoot bcame curate of Haslemere, 1909–1912; Bursar of Wells Theological College, 1912–1913; Vice-Principal, 1913–1916; Principal, 1916–1919; Examining Chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1913–1953; Fellow and Chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford, 1919–1921; Bampton Lecturer, 1934; Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, 1938; Six Preacher at Canterbury Cathedral, 1948–1953.
Furthermore, he also had several publications: History and Interpretation in the Gospels, 1935; Locality and Doctrine in the Gospels, 1938; The Gospel Message of St Mark, 1950.
Arrangement
The collection was received packaged in labelled envelopes and the descriptions on the labels have been retained in the catalogue.
