Biographical / Historical

Hugh Mackintosh Foot, Baron Caradon, colonial administrator and diplomat. Born 1907, died 1990. Married Florence Sylvia Tod in 1936.

Joined the Colonial Service in 1929. Administrative Officer, Palestine (1929-38); Colonial Office, England (1938-9); Assistant British Resident, Trans-Jordan (1939-42); British Military Administration, Cyrenaica (1942-3); Colonial Secretary, Cyprus (1943-5); Colonial Secretary, Jamaica (1945-7); Chief Secretary, Nigeria (1947-51); Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief, Jamaica (1951-7); Governor and Commander-in-Chief, Cyprus (1957-60); Ambassador and Adviser in the UK Mission to the UN and UK representative on Trusteeship Council (1961-2); Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Permanent UK Representative at the UN (1964-70); Consultant to UN Development Programme (1971-5).
