Texts relating to the Russian Orthodox Church translated into English by Richard White Blackmore
Translations of Russian texts comprising:
- 1. "The Oustaff (or the Statutes) of the Spiritual Consistories", a translation of Уставъ духовныхъ консисторій, СПб., 1841, (Bodleian copy at shelfmark 14198 e.325). Blackmore's translation is also to be found in Lambeth Palace MS 1550.
- 2. Specimens of entries in registers of births, marriages and deaths and other suchlike certificates, illustrating contemporary Russian practice.
- 3. The 18 articles of the Synod of Bethlehem (1672) "and the Imperial and Patriarchal Letters which were the occasion of that Russian version" (Everitt 1977: 101). This refers to the Russian translation of the proceedings of the Synod made in 1723 in connexion with the approaches made to the Russian Church by English Non-Jurors; the material was published in St Petersburg in 1838, and the translation presumably made from this edition.
- 4. The Orthodox Confession (Православное Исповѣданіе), the standard expression of Orthodox doctrine originating with Peter Mohyla in the seventeenth century. It went through many editions, and the translation indicates that it was made from that published in Moscow, 1839. Mainly in a different hand from the rest of the MS, possibly that of William Palmer.
With bookplate inside front cover of St Basil's House, 52 Ladbroke Grove, London, and bookplate 'Ex Libris N. Zernov' on folio ii.
