Biographical / Historical

Edward Burton (1794-1836) was a Church of England clergyman and theologian. He was appointed regius professor of divinity at Oxford in 1829. For further details see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Possibly owned by Austin Cooper (1759-1830); inscribed ‘Mss. No 6’ and ‘No 75’ (pastedown); Thomas Thorpe, supplement to catalogue of manuscripts (1836), 104; Phillipps MS.8841; Sotheby’s, 19 June 1893, lot 70, and 6 June 1898, lot 686.
