Biographical / Historical

Trained as a printer in Norfolk, Joseph Cundall came to London at the age of sixteen. He took an interest in illustrated children's books, first as an author, soon as a printer and publisher. He is best known for his invention of the Christmas card in 1846. He formed a partnership with photographer George Downes, and later with Philip Delamotte, and Robert Howlett, becoming a pioneer in photographic book illustration.
