Biographical / Historical
George Downes was a British photographer. He worked in partnership with Joseph Cundall as Cundall, Downes & Co. In July 1860 he accompanied astronomer Warren De la Rue on an expedition to Spain to photograph the Solar Eclipse. The photographs obtained on that occasion proved beyond doubt the solar character of the prominences, or red flames, seen around the limb of the moon during a solar eclipse.
