Notes, chiefly of speeches by Asquith, 1895-1927
Also included are: other papers apparently used in preparing speeches; a typescript paper (n.d. but apparently of 1906) headed 'The question of the Lords' which is probably not by Asquith (the alterations and additions are not in his hand); an apparent first draft of Campbell-Bannerman's speech on the House of Lords question in the Commons, 1907; and a collection of quotations from Asquith on Home Rule, 1893-1910 (put under 1912 as they were probably collected in connection with the Home Rule Bill). A few sheets of miscellaneous jottings - quotations, jokes, etc. - are placed at the end of MS. Asquith 50.
The notes for speeches have been dated as far as possible. In a few cases however - notably a number of scraps on fiscal policy (presumably 1903-1905) - it has not been possible to identify the exact date. In such cases an approximate date has been assigned. A few printed speeches, and in one case a typescript copy of a newspaper report, are included.
