    request

In 1933 six British engineers employed by Metropolitan-Vickers in the USSR were arrested by the Soviet authorities together with twelve Soviet citizens also employed by the company. They were charged with industrial and military spying, wrecking activities and anti-Soviet activities in the electric generation plants in which they worked. These papers form the company's documentation of the arrests and trial of its employees together with some associated papers. Of the British accused one was acquitted, three were banished from the Soviet Union and deported, while two (Thornton and MacDonald) received prison sentences. These last were released and deported after a few months. The Soviet employees also received prison sentences with the exception of one too ill to stand trial and one who was acquitted.
