Biographical / Historical
The Westinghouse Electric Company Ltd. was formed in 1889 to sell and install products of the U.S. Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. The British Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company Ltd. was created in 1899 to start manufacture in this country, with works being established at Trafford Park, Manchester. The Westinghouse Electric Company then became a subsidiary of British Westinghouse. In 1917 British Westinghouse was purchased by the Metropolitan Carriage, Wagon and Finance Company Ltd., which was itself taken over by Vickers Ltd. in 1919. British Westinghouse was then renamed the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company Ltd. The name of the Company was further changed to Associated Electrical Industries Ltd. in 1929, but Metropolitan-Vickers continued in existence as a subsidiary firm. Records of the Westinghouse companies and both the original and new Metropolitan-Vickers are covered in this series; the records of Associated Electrical Industries have been treated separately except where there is some overlap, as indicated.
