Records of the Oxford Medical Society, 1892-2006
The minutes of the first meeting state that 'the idea of this Society originated from the Members of a Small Medical Club exisitng in the City, who proposed that Evening Meetings shd be held at monthly intervals for the discussion of Subjects & the Exhibition of Specimens bearing on Medicine & Surgery...the promoters of the New society, had no wish to in any way compete with the Older Society of wh[ich] most of those present were Members.' The 'Older Society' was the British Medical Association Branch Society.
