Shubin, Semyon, 1989-1990
Correspondence and papers
Shubin, a Russian physicist, had died of cold in a Soviet labour camp. The correspondence is with S. Vonsovsky who had adopted and brought up Shubin's family after his arrest, and was organizing a memorial volume of his papers, with tributes by colleagues. Among Shubin's papers had been a letter written to Peierls on the Hall effect in ferromagnetism, Mar 1937 but not posted before his arrest. Peierls decided to send a retrospective reply to this letter as if he had received it at the time.
