The writer was a native of Exeter; at Putney he stayed some days with his uncle, Sir Francis Clarke; at Leghorn he lodged at the house of Mr. James Gould, "my intended partner;" at Florence, Carlo Dolce, "a famous paynter, drew my picture, which I sent to Exon;" at Naples, "found my partner Newport Littleton at our house," the title of the firm being then "Gould, Littleton and Broking," but from Jan 1670 altered to "John Broking and N. Littleton."

The writer arrived at Naples on 2 Nov 1668, and quitted it on rumours of war with Spain, 12 Mar 1672, on a coasting voyage to Leghorn, where he arrived on 23 Mar.
