Reports of cases in law from 26 Hen. VIII. to 21 Eliz., collected by William Bendlowes, serjeant-at-law, bulk: 16th century
An index of matters is prefixed.
On the first leaf are several inscriptions written in 1600 by William Bendlowes, son of the compiler of the volume, to the following effect, "Will. Bendlowes, quondam socius de Lincolnes Inne, et nuper solus serviens ad legem in Anglia per quoddam tempus, temporibus regnorum Philippi regis et Marie regine et Elizabeth regine, existens, hunc librum composuit, etatis sue quinquaginta et septem annorum, et tempore sui dicti status et gradus decem et novem annorum."
At fol. 264b is "The manner or order of the makyng of newe serjaunts creat and made in Michelmas Terme, anno xix. et xx. Eliz.," with a list of the rings and liveries given by them. The new Serjeants were Francis Gawdye and Anderson of the Inner Temple, Shutt of Gray's Inn, Baber and Windham of Lincoln's Inn, and Fenner of the Middle Temple, and the only remaining old serjeants were Bendlowes, Pownell, and Meade.
At fol. 282, list of the Justices of the King's Bench from the beginning of the reign of Hen. IV. to 23 Hen. VII. At the end are added by W. Bendlowes, jun., the names of the Chief Justices in 1600.
The Reports end on fol. 292; then follow miscellaneous collections, chiefly in the handwriting of the son.
(fols. 298–306, 342–452) are blank.
