Custodial History

In a letter from Dr. Rawlinson, dated 24 Jun 1741, and preserved in MS. Ballard ii. No. 59, there is an account of Dr. R.'s acquisition of the papers of Compton and Robinson, successively bishops of London, which, he says, "I lately rescued from the grocers, chandlers, etc... They belonged to one Mr. Gibbon, lately dead, who was private secretary to both the aforementioned prelates." Other volumes of these papers are MSS. Rawl. A. 285, 286, 374, 375, 376, Rawl. C. 982–985, as well as the two volumes next following [MSS. Rawl. C. 392-393.]
