A register of marriages performed at the Fleet prison, from 4 Mar 1725 to 3 Jan 1731, containing about 440 entries, 18th century
An index of men's names is prefixed, adding to the 54 leaves.
On a fly-leaf at the beginning is this title: "A true and exact register of marriages at the Fleet: A.D. 1724–5;" to which is added (in the handwriting of E. Umfreville) the following note: "which being produced on a trial relating to the marriage of Francis Goulding in Aug 1726, came to the hands of Rich. Wolfe, esq., register of the duchy, who gave it to Dr. Rawlinson, 2 Feb 1754."
The signatures of the officiating ministers are as follows:
- T. C. [i.e. Thos. Crawford;]
- J. Evans;
- John Jones;
- John Floud or Floyd;
- J. W. [i.e. Jas. Wagstaff;]
- J. Gaynam;
- Robert Cuthbert;
- James Starke;
- and D. Wigmore.
All the earlier portion of the book, as far, probably, as the end of the year 1728 (containing the marriages performed by the first three persons mentioned above) appears to be transcribed from some other volume, the entries being for the most part in one handwriting, and occasional reference being made to an "ολδ βοοχ." Reference is also made in two or three places, in Greek letters, to "Walt. James' register."
