Papers relative to three questions proposed by James II. in 1687 and 1688 to all the deputy lieutenants and justices of the peace in England and Wales; consisting of replies and returns from most of the counties, together with lists of additional persons proposed for those offices. The questions were these, as put to each lieutenant and justice separately:

  1. If in case he shall be chosen knight of the shire or burgess of a town, when the king shall think fit to call a parliament, whether he will be for taking off the penal laws and the tests;
  2. Whether he will assist and contribute to the election of such members as shall be for taking off the penal laws and the tests;
  3. Whether he will support the king's declaration for liberty of conscience, by living friendly with those of all persuasions, as subjects of the same prince and good Christians ought to do.

A table of contents is prefixed to the volume, comprising 75 entries.

At the end is a list, in Dr. Rawlinson's handwriting, of the lord lieutenants of the counties of England and Wales in 1687.
