'The Naturall Historie of Wiltshire, 1685', the rough draft by John Aubrey' part 1, Written in 1656-1691 chiefly by John Aubrey
Volume 1 of 2. The rough draft by John Aubrey, in two volumes, with a table of chapters prefixed to each. A fuller copy in one volume, by Aubrey, was formerly in the library of the Royal Society and in 1847 was in the possession of George Poulett Scrope, esq., M.P., of Castle Combe, from which the work was in parts edited for the Wiltshire Topographical Society by John Britton, F.S.A. (1847). Begun in 1656, it was submitted to the Royal Society in 1675 but not published. This copy lacks the chapters on 'Architecture', 'Accidents', and 'Seates', but contains notes by John Ray, John Evelyn, and bishop Thomas Tanner and Thomas Gale, not copied into the Royal Society volume. On the title-page (fol. 3) is the note 'Mr David Loggan drew my picture anno 1686, which is in his hands, to be engraven for this book', and on fol. 3v a note concerning the annotations by Evelyn.
