Numbers 204-205, written at Keffi and Jos. Those from Keffi are fastened together (number 204): they include Mathews's letter to his brother Basil commenting on the latter's book The Clash of Colour, a copy of which will be found in 3/7. The letter dated 13 May 1924 contains an account of the work of Provincial and Native Courts, with references to John H. Harris. Officers mentioned include Major T.A.G. Budgen, Major B. Glasson, Captain A. Harrison, Captain A.J. Hicks-Gower, and Dr. G.D.K. Waldron. Number 205 consists of letters written in 1925 and 1926 from Jos, after which Mathews's wife had joined him. They describe Mathews's appointment as Anthropological Officer, Southern Provinces; the journey to Enugu and their home there; the terms of reference of Mathews's new post. There is mention in the letter dated 2 Mar 1926 of Ormsby-Gore's tour of Nigeria; also a comparison of the systems of administration in the Northern and Southern Provinces.
