Family correspondence, 20 Jan-26 Dec 1922
Numbers 170-195, written while Mathews was stationed again at Jemaa. Numbers 173-178 are concerned with a police patrol to subdue the villages of the Attaka hills: there is a copy of Mathews's report dated 24 Apr with a covering letter from Norton Traill, and a letter dated 5 Nov refers to Winston Churchill's comments on the patrol. Mathews's report of 4 August and a letter of 8 August (numbers 184-185) deal with the suggestion that part of the Mama District should be transferred to Bauchi Province, with particular reference to slave-raiding and to the high incidence of sleeping sickness in the Mama District. (See also 2/6, fols. 110-118.) Number 188 is a copy of a letter to the editor of the Methodist Times about the missions in 'Moslem' Emirates. Attached to number 194 is a cutting from West Africa of 4 November about slave-raiding with comments added in Mathews's hand. There are frequent references to the organising of labour for railway construction. Officers mentioned include Captain Barnes, T.F. Carlyle, C.N.A. Clarke, F.B. Drummond and B.R. Lawrence.
