Family correspondence, 1 Mar 1915-6 Jan 1916
Numbers 68-74, written at Wamba and when on trek in Lafia Division. The first describes the 'pagan' tribes of whom Mathews was in charge; later letters describe his work in surveying, mapping, assessing and collecting arrears of tribute. Number 69 includes a Reuters' News Telegram dated 11 May 1915 which told of a German attack on a British outpost near Yola, one of the officers named being Lieutenant Fitzpatrick (see above, 1/3); Mathews described Fitzpatrick's visit to him and his account of the incident. In number 74 Mathews wrote of a visit to the Nigerian Tin Corporation camp to meet James Scott, a geologist: see 2/3 (fols. 22-35) for letters from Scott. There is a note that Mathews arrived in England on leave on 22 Feb 1916.
