Family correspondence, 1 Dec 1910-21 Jun 1911
Numbers 1-29 written on the voyage from England to Lagos, then at Kabba, Okene, and on board a stern-wheel paddle boat on the Rivers Niger and Benue en route to Keffi, in Nassarawa Province. In number 29, Mathews wrote of his first meeting with Major H.D. Larymore, Resident at Keffi, who is often mentioned in later letters (see 1/14 for Mrs. Larymore's account of Kabba). Other officers mentioned include B.D. Byfield, H.B. James ("Jimmie"), J.A. Ley-Greaves, Dr. M.W. Manuk and I.C. Walker.
