Biographical / Historical
The Whisper, Journal of the Junior Imperial League Diss and District Branch was a 4-page newspaper published monthly by Diss Publishing Co.
The foreword to the first edition, written by the Editor, states: ‘…we expect a great number of “whys” over this paper. “Why does the branch need a paper?” “Why are we having a paper anyway?” Well, why? The question is an easy one to answer. It is not done primarily for fun; although, of course, we hope you will get a great deal of fun out of it. It has been said that the Press is the gossamer thread that can bind nations together in themselves...All we wish is to bind the local branch in a tighter bond, and in doing so, further the basic object of the Junior Imperial League of binding ourselves more tightly to the inimitable cause of the Conservative Party…Papers will not run themselves; they mean a lot of hard work. This is where everybody can help. You can each take a straw, instead of the backs of the Editorial Staff becoming broken. There is a box in the Club Room, near the notice board. It has a nice little slot in the tip – a hungry mouth waiting for your contribution. An article, a joke, a letter – even a poem; as long as it pertains to the League and the activities of the League.’
