Abstract
Included within this section are newsletters, magazines and periodicals intended for specific groups within the Conservative Party, such as women, trade unionists, and students, or which dealt with a specific subject or policy area such as health, education, and information technology.
Biographical / Historical
In addition to working files and papers, the Conservative Party Archive (CPA) also includes an extensive range of non-manuscript material comprising printed and published material by and about the Conservative Party.
This includes this collection of newsletters, magazines and periodicals, created either for specific groups within the Conservative Party, or to discuss specific subject or policy areas. These publications were primarily produced by the responsible department within Conservative Central Office, in conjunction with the respective Advisory Committee of the National Union, for instance publications for teachers were produced by the Education Department at Conservative Central Office, whilst those aimed at trade unionists were produced by the Labour Department.
Many of these publications have existed since the late 19th century and have evolved and undergone name-changes and remain in existence today, while others only remained in publication for a few years. Subjects covered in the publications, spanning from 1892-2021, include health, European affairs, and education, and intended audiences include women, students, speakers and canvassers.
Custodial History
The archive of the Conservative Party was established as a source for academic study at the Bodleian Library in 1978 by an agreement made between the University of Oxford and the Conservative Party, and brought together surviving historic papers of the Party previously held in various locations including Newcastle University Library and the former Conservative Central Office in Smith Square, London. Since 1996, ownership of the archive has been vested in the Conservative Party Archive Trust. The archive includes records from all three areas of Party organisation: parliamentary, voluntary and professional.
