Biographical / Historical

The Conservative Group for Europe (renamed in Apr 2009 as Conservative Europe Group and in Jan 2021 as the Conservative European Forum), is a special interest group affiliated to the Conservative Party, initially founded in 1969 to promote the UK's entry into the European Economic Community. The Group works with MPs, MEPs and others with specialist knowledge to produce timely policy research. Publications, which take the form of full policy pamphlets or shorter briefing papers entitled Policy Points, aim to stimulate debate within the Party and beyond on a wide range of European issues.

In the foreword to the 2002 Party Conference edition of Conservative Europe, the magazine of the Conservative Group for Europe, Lord Heseltine, then President of the Group, states: 'The Conservative Group for Europe supports and promotes Britain's active and full-hearted membership of the European Union. We believe that it is in the interests of both the Party and the nation that Conservatives should play a positive, pragmatic and leading role in the debates that will affect the future of the EU. Our varied activities include hosting debates on topical European issues, publishing policy research and campaigning in European elections. As President of the Conservative Group for Europe I warmly welcome the publication of Conservative Europe. The distinguished group of contributors brought together here each provide an invaluable insight and perspective on the work of the European Union. As such Conservative Europe makes a powerful contribution to the European debate, a debate which is as relevant now to the future of our country as it has ever been.'
