The contents include autograph music, poetry, prose and pictures, collected and mounted by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy before the volume was presented, with ascriptions in his hand; with contributions from himself, family and friends, before and after it was presented, 27 Jun 1836 (fol. 109v) - 11 May 1848 (fol. 183).

  1. (fol. 3) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. 10 lines of verse beg. 'Zwar die vierundzwanzig Ritter', inscribed on verso 'Der Frau von Zigesar geb. v. Stein'. No signature or date. Printed in Werke, Weimar, 1887-1918, 1. Abth., 4, 1891, p. 43.
  2. (fols. 6-7a) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Pen and ink drawing. Oval, longest measurements 196 × 277 mm. A signature [cut from a letter?] was pasted beside it.
  3. (fols. 7c-dv) Johann Sebastian Bach. Copies now known to be by Christian Gottlob Meissner of 4 choral preludes from the Orgelbüchlein: BWV 636, 'Vater unser im Himmelreich'; BWV 637, 'Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt'; BWV 633, 'Liebster Jesu wir sind hier: in Canone alla Quinta a 2 Clav. et Ped'; and BWV 635, 'Dies sind die Heil'gen zehn Geboth'. See Hans-Joachim Schulze in Bach Jahrbuch, 1968. Double leaf, small oblong quarto (166 × 200 mm.) Watermark indistinct, upper half only present: cross on coat of arms? surrounded by wreath. Not wholly unlike Heawood 619.
  4. (fols. 8-9) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Allegro in G minor for piano, K. 312. Inscribed [by Aloys Fuchs] '1ter Satz einer Sonate. W. A. Mozarts original Handschrift'. Double leaf, 214 × ca. 275 mm. No watermark visible. 12 staves. Cut by binder at outer edge without loss of text. See Köchel, 6th ed. 1964, p. 591.
  5. (fols. 11-11v) Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller. Autograph fragments of his translation of Racine's Phèdre [III. v. 984 and 1003]. No signature or date. Another piece 'von Schiller' is missing.
  6. (fols. 12-13) Joseph Haydn. 'No. 3. Presto 3/8 Takt, geschrieben für eine Spieluhr. Für meine Autographen-Sammlung erhalten von Hh. Artaria in November 1835. Aloys Fuchs'. This manuscript is described by Hoboken, XIX. 31. Corrected draft, signed. Kept in portfolio. Double leaf, 214 × 310 mm. Watermark: 3 crescents; counter-mark: half heart pierced by two-headed arrow. 10 staves.

  9. (fol. 18) Letter from Christoph Wilhelm Dohm to Moses Mendelssohn, 19 Jun 1782, with M. Mendelssohn's answer written on it.
  10. (fols. 19-21) Ludwig van Beethoven. Ecossais and trio in D for military band. Score signed 'par Beethoven 1810 a Baaden'. Named by Kinsky, Wo 022. Probably obtained by F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy from A. Fuchs. Kept in portfolio. Double leaf, with a single leaf inserted, 15 staves(fol. 20v blank). 202 × 311 mm. Watermark: GIBB.

Mendelssohn Bartholdy by Bärmann, who wrote on the back 9 bars from the last movement of Weber's Clarinet Concerto no. 1, 'Meinem lieben Mendelssohn Bartoldi zu Erinnerung'.

Physical Facet

Binding: dark red morocco, tooled and ornamented with gilt and with red and green inlay. Gilt edges. Originally 68 single sheets of various paper, some tinted, some ruled with 10 staves, plus end-papers. Many of the items were mounted on existing leaves or pasted to stubs. Sewn in 10 gatherings. Total i + 189 leaves.
