Laboratory Working Group III. Site of the laboratory. Chairman: A. Rörsch.
The working group began by establishing criteria for the choice of site and, at its first meeting in January 1971 considered the report of the EMBO Sites Subcommittee of the Laboratory Committee. It also visited the two sites near Munich already visited by the EMBO Subcommittee and, after some uncertainties about the availability of the Heidelberg site and attempts to revive the connection with CERN, a major visit was made to Heidelberg in July after which the Group's report recommended acceptance of the site. The report was accepted by the Conference in October.
Folder G.74. August 1970 - January 1971. Correspondence, memoranda and working group's report on criteria for site.
Folder G.75. January 1971. Papers for first meeting 3-4 January, including EMBO sites report, memo on report by O. Maaløe (EMBO Subcommittee chairman), comments by A. Rörsch (EMBC working group chairman), Interim Report of working group.
Folder G.76. February - April 1971. Papers for second meeting and visits to two sites near Munich (Garching and Martinsried), programme of visits and meetings, list of participants, second Interim Report of working group, correspondence.
Folder G.77. Official offers by Federal Republic of Germany of sites for laboratory at Munich-Garching and Munich-Martinsried, details of sites, maps etc.
Folder G.78. February - April 1971. Correspondence and papers on visit to Heidelberg 1 April. This was by a "Second Working Party" arranged by EMBO Council and its interim report (by N.K. Jerne) confirmed the previous report in recommending Heidelberg as preferred site. It was hoped that this would "give the German Federal authorities the opportunity to make an additional site offer apart from the ones in the Munchen area", as proved to be the case. H. Voirier, A. Rörsch and O. Brieskorn attended as observers for EMBC. Folder includes Kendrew's notes, correspondence, copy of Jerne's Interim Report.
Folder G.79. Personal report by A. Rörsch on the Munich and Heidelberg sites, 15 April 1971.
Folder G.80. April - May 1971. Correspondence on meeting at CERN on possible site for laboratory adjacent to CERN (not successful); also included is Kendrew's letter to C. Zelle on possibility of official offer by Germany of Heidelberg site.
Folder G.81. April - June 1971. Correspondence on EMBC working group's visit to Heidelberg 12-14 July. Includes information on official offer of site, list of participants.
Folder G.82. July 1971. Correspondence with H.E. Huxley on his objections to the Heidelberg site (sent too late to be considered at meeting).
