The letters reflect the following events in the Moody sisters' lives. Joan Moody was placed in boarding school in St Andrew's, Fife, in 1934 and was joined there by Jill in 1935. Judith followed them to St Leonard's School in 1946. On leaving school in 1940 Joan, accompanied by Mrs Ewing, went to Mauritius.
