The final reel of chronological correspondence holds little new about Smith's life and work. His health declined so rapidly that his plan to find rooms at Ithaca was replaced by a decision to enter a sanitarium at Clifton Springs. Before this was effected he fell in his home and was confined to bed for the last months of his life. A paragraph from a letter sent to the New York Sun shortly before his fall shows his mind in fair working order, "Jefferson says that all men are created equal.…
