Biographical / Historical

For biographical details, see entry for Anne Isabella [Annabella] Noel [née Milbanke] suo jure Baroness Wentworth, and Lady Byron in Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Custodial History

These papers were inherited by the donor's father, Major John Surtees OBE, from Miss Nora Hermione Wentworth Byron (1886-1969), grand-daughter of the Rev. Augustus Byron (1828-1907), Rector of Kirkby Mallory in Leicestershire. The Rev. Augustus Byron was the son of Lord Byron's cousin and heir, George Anson Byron, 7th Baron Byron (1789-1868).

Nora Byron was a House Dame at Eton for thirty-five years between 1928 and 1963, and published her memoir, Eton: A Dame's Chronicle in 1965. Nora Byron was House Dame when Major John Surtees attended Eton and helped him to return to civilian life after the Second World War (he was captured at Calais in 1939). Nora died unmarried and Major John Surtees was her Executor.
