Abstract

Included within this section are newsletters, journals and periodicals produced by the Conservative Party or one of its affiliated organisations, intended for Party-wide consumption, 1893-2002. [For newsletters intended for specific groups only within the Party, see the separate catalogue PUB M]. It includes all titles originating from Conservative Central Office, regardless of whether they were produced by the National Union, Central Office or one of its departments, the Conservative Political Centre or the Conservative Research Department.

Biographical / Historical

In addition to working files and papers, the Conservative Party Archive (CPA) also includes an extensive range of non-manuscript material comprising printed and published material by and about the Conservative Party. This includes this collection of titles which have been published by the Conservative Party since the late 19th century, many of which have evolved and undergone name-changes and still exist today, while others ceased publication after just a few years.

Custodial History

The archive of the Conservative Party was established as a source for academic study at the Bodleian Library in 1978 by an agreement made between the University of Oxford and the Conservative Party, and brought together surviving historic papers of the Party previously held in various locations including Newcastle University Library and the former Conservative Central Office in Smith Square, London. Since 1996, ownership of the archive has been vested in the Conservative Party Archive Trust. The archive includes records from all three areas of Party organisation: parliamentary, voluntary and professional.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Conservative Party.
