Edward Lowe's set of 'Latine and English Songs... by the best Italian and English Authors', probably copied mainly between 1663 ('Dr. Christopher Gibbons', see item 12) and John Blow's doctorate, Dec 1677 (see item 42). Additional music was also copied by both Richard Goodsons. All were indexed by Lowe in each volume. The composers of some items have not been identified.

These manuscripts appear in the 1682 list of the Music School collection.

Each of the 8 volumes represents a vocal or instrumental part as follows:

11-15: Two voices (treble or meane and bass) with basso continuo.

16-17: Two meanes with basso continuo.

18-24: Counter tenor and tenor (22, countertenor and bass) with basso continuo.

25-39: Two meanes with basso continuo.

40-41: Three voices (two meanes and bass) with basso continuo.

42-43: Two voices and basso continuo.

46-49: Three voices (counter-tenor, tenor and bass) with basso continuo.

Custodial History

This item is part of the Music School collection of printed and manuscript music, which was originally bequeathed to the University of Oxford by William Heather (c 1563-1627), and gradually added to until the end of the 18th century.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred to the Bodleian in 1885.

Paper differs, principally two kinds of fool's cap and two coats of arms. Ruling: 10 5-lined staves, red marginal ruling. Binding: marbled boards, labelled by Lowe.
