26 pieces with Edward Lowe's title on fol. 63: 'Mr. Sympson's little Consort: Prickt and given mee by Mr. Francis Withye: 11 Jan. 1672/3'. In the hand of Francis Withy. The numbering of this manuscript was adopted by the Viola da Gamba Society.

The instrumental parts are: i, treble; ii, lyra (in tablature); iii, Bass; iv, Bassus Continuus.

Custodial History

This item is part of the Music School collection of printed and manuscript music, which was originally bequeathed to the University of Oxford by William Heather (c 1563-1627), and gradually added to until the end of the 18th century. The present manuscript was once owned by Francis Withy.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred to the Bodleian in 1885.

4 part-books now bound as one volume. 20, 20, 10 and 10 leaves, each quired in one gathering within a white paper cover. Watermark, Fleur de Lys, countermark, IA (i, iii-iv), IHS (ii). IA ruled with 6 5-lined staves, IHS with 6 6-lined staves, all with brown marginal ruling.
