Parts, two of which were copied by James Sherard, who also wrote 'Mr. Finger' on the cover of item 3 (fol. 26v). The principal copyist is the same as MS. Mus. Sch. d. 249, nos. 18-23. Item 1 is '3', item 4 is '99'. All published: Edition Baroque, 2007.

Abstract

Four viola da gamba duos by 'Peter Greck', [c 1700].

Biographical / Historical

Peter Grecke is a little-known composer, born around 1645, who lived and worked as a town musician in Lübeck, Germany. He is thought to have studied under Franz Tunder.

Custodial History

This item is part of the Music School collection of printed and manuscript music, which was originally bequeathed to the University of Oxford by William Heather (c 1563-1627), and gradually added to until the end of the 18th century. The present manuscript was once owned by James Sherard.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred to the Bodleian in 1885.

Physical Facet

iii + 35 leaves; thick wove paper. Each part occupies one double sheet, ruled with 10 staves as needed, kept within folders. Sherard's copies are on large upright quarto. Watermark Fleur de Lys, countermark CDG, ruled with 12 5-lined staves and red marginal ruling.
