'Fac-simile of an ancient Greek Inscription on a gold plate fou[nd in the] ruins of ... Canopus between Alexandria and Rosetta [and sent] by Mehemet Aly Basha ... as a present to Sir Sidney Smith.' The facsimile is on gilt paper, 2 1/4 × 6 3/4 in., and is accompanied by a copy of Henry Salt's letter forwarding the original to sir S. Smith, Oct. 2, 1818, a translation of the inscription (to the effect that king Ptolemy Euergetes I [B.C. 247-222] and queen Berenice dedicate a temple to Osiris), and an account of the original. The Inscription is no. 4694 in Boeckh's C. I. G., and is now in the British Museum.
