Thomas Benson (1109) of Rysuppe in Yorkshire. William Benson Earle (1740-1796) was a philanthropist.

Custodial History

A pedigree roll of the family of Benson of Bromley, from Thomas Benson of Rysuppe in Yorkshire, A.D. 1109, to William Benson Earle alive in 1760, whose father changed his name from Benson to Earle. There are about 80 fully coloured coats of arms of Benson in connexion with other families, followed by two larger ones of Sir William Benson of Bromley, knighted in 1706.

In the middle is an English translation of an Indulgence granted by prior John Kendale to Robert and Margaret Benson, Apr. 20, 1480.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

At the end are some notes (partly on paper) by Henry Gough, who obtained the roll in Sept. 1876 from mr. Charles Stockdale Benning, town clerk of Dunstable, and presented it on Aug. 17, 1900, to the Library.
