Abstract
Manuscripts of music by T.W. Bourne and others (chiefly Handel) in Bourne's hand, and related material.
Biographical / Historical
Thomas William Bourne (1862-1948) was a musical scholar with main interest in G.F. Handel. First biographical details were published in an article by Sir Thomas Armstrong 'T.W. Bourne (1862-1948) - a forgotten pioneer' in The Handel Institute Newsletter, vol. 3 no. 1 (Spring 1992). Further biographical information can be found in the introduction to the catalogue of the music bequeathed by T.W. Bourne to the Bodleian Library and published on the Bodleian Archives & Manuscripts website.
Custodial History
In 1948 the Bodleian Library received a substantial collection of manuscript and printed music bequeathed by T.W. Bourne. This collection is catalogued elsewhere on the Bodleian Archives & Manuscripts website. In 1992 further material was gifted by Sir Thomas Armstrong to the Handel Institute having been originally preserved at the Open University Library. In 2016 the Handel Institue donated this material to the Bodleian to complement the original bequest.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated by the Handel Institute, 24 March 2015.
