Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari: collection of madrigals for 2-3 voices and continuo

 Collection

  • How to
    request

A collection of madrigals in Italian in two volumes labelled on the upper boards: 'Clari's madrigals vol. III (-IV)'. In the hand of a mid-18th-cent. English copyist. The volumes belonged to Charles Avison, and (together with the missing first two volumes) were evidently the source for his English adaptations of selected works as 'canticles' to words from the Psalms (of which two volumes of Avison's autographs are in Newcastle Public Library, and a third in the Bodleian, MS. Mus. d. 267). An early pencil index on p. 131 of the first volume also indentifies some of the English versions.
