Italian operatic arias copied by two different hands

Operatic arias for solo voice or duet and bass from several Venetian operas of the later 1680s. In addition to a few unidentified arias, operas represented are: Carlo Pallavicino, Elmiro, re di Corinto (1687) [37 arias]; Carlo Pallavicino, L'Amazzone corsara (1686) [14 arias]; Paolo Biego, La fortuna tra le disgrazie (1688) [12 arias]; Giuseppe Felice Tosi, Orazio (1688) [3 arias]; Domenico Gabrielli, Il Gordiano (1688) [7 arias, 1 duet]; Domenico Gabrielli, Carlo il Grande (1688) [9 arias, 1 duet]; Marc' Antonio Ziani, L'inganno regnante (1688) [13 arias]. On fol. 1 is the title 'Nro. 3. Arie dell' Opera di S. Gio: Grisostomo, Intitulata L'Elmiro Rè di Corinto dell Sign. Palavic[ino]. 'L'Elmiro' was first performed at the Theatro San Giorgio Gristostomo in Venice on 26 Dec 1687. 'N3' is repeated at the beginning of the second quire, p. 9, and 'Aria dell Opera di S. Gio. Grisostomo', at the beginning of the fifth quire on p. 53, referring to operas performed at that theatre (nos. 33-40). The second hand wrote the sixth to the twelfth quires (nos. 41-100).

Biographical / Historical

The only composer named in this source is Carlo Pallavicino (c 1640-1688). Details of his life and work, along with those of the other composers represented, can be found in Grove Music Online.

Custodial History

This item is part of the Music School collection of printed and manuscript music, which was originally bequeathed to the University of Oxford by William Heather (c 1563-1627), and gradually added to until the end of the 18th century. This manuscript was probably once owned by James Sherard (1666-1738).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred to the Bodleian in 1885.
