Part-books now bound in two volumes: i, 1st treble; ii, 2nd treble; iii, organ part; iv-v 'loose Bases'; vi, bass. Parts copied by Edward Lowe, probably from the sets listed as having been bought for £5 by 1667 (see Music & Letters 48:1, p. 25), with two extra bass parts perhaps from the original set in another hand. Lowe also added bass parts of music by W. King and R. Cobb.

Custodial History

This item is part of the Music School collection of printed and manuscript music, which was originally bequeathed to the University of Oxford by William Heather (c 1563-1627), and gradually added to until the end of the 18th century.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred to the Bodleian in 1885.

Sch. c. 102a, upright folio: i + ii, each consisting of a quire of 10 with watermark Fool's cap resembling Heawood 1921, countermark PG, followed by 4 bifolia with the same watermark as MS. Mus. Sch. d. 231, 16. The first quire is ruled with 10 5-lined staves, black marginal ruling at both edges; the extra bifolia are ruled with 12 5-lined staves, black marginal ruling; MS. Mus. Sch. c. 102b, oblong quarto. iii + vi, each consisting of 6 quires of 4 with watermark coat of arms resembling Heawood 661, 6 5-lined staves, black marginal ruling. iv + v: iv, quire of 4 with watermark pelican, somewhat resembling Heawood 199, 5 5-lined staves black marginal ruling; v, as iv, with 2 extra quires of 4, watermark Fool's cap, not in Heawood, 5 5-lined staves, black marginal ruling. i, ii and iv have grey paper covers; iii and vi, white paper covers, inscribed by Lowe, '18th. 4 Bookes besides loose Bases &'.
