A copy of Christopher Simpson's Chelys, 2nd ed. (1667), with additional music in manuscript
A copy of Christopher Simpson's Chelys, 2nd ed. (1667) bound with blank leaves at the end on which the owner, Wiliam Noble (1649/50-1681), copied music, mostly divisions for one and for two bass viols by John Jenkins and others. Some of the pieces may be Noble's own composition. Not in the 1682 list.

Custodial History
This item is part of the Music School collection of printed and manuscript music, which was originally bequeathed to the University of Oxford by William Heather (c 1563-1627), and gradually added to until the end of the 18th century.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was transferred to the Bodleian in 1885.
Physical Facet
Pp. 79-176 are six quires of paper. Watermark, Fool's Cap resembling Heawood 2002. Pp. 137-138 are an inserted leaf of different paper, Fool's Cap, indistinct. Red marginal ruling. Staves were ruled as needed, presumably by William Noble, and vary from 10 to 16 to a page. Calf binding with blind fillets and ornaments.
