'Twenty four [really 23] canticles in 2 volumes [taken from works] by Carlo Clari'
Twenty four [really 23] canticles in 2 volumes, taken from works by Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari and adapted to English words selected from the Psalms by Charles Avison. For 2 voices with continuo.
Two volumes bound in one. The copyist of the first volume is the same as that of MS. Mus. d. 267 (pp. 14-28), probably a relative or pupil of Avison, as may also be the different copyist of volume 2.
The contents of the first volumes correspond to those of the copy of the 'first collection' of canticles mainly in Avison's own hand, now in Newcastle Public Library; 8 of the 11 canticles in the second volume correspond to those in the 'second collection' in Newcastle, while the remaining 3 correspond to canticles in the 'third collection' (Bodleian MS. Mus. d. 267). There is no canticle numbered 21. Traced sources are indicated below.

Abstract
Twenty four [really 23] canticles in 2 volumes, taken from works by Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari. Adapted to English words selected from the Psalms by Charles Avison, [late 18th cent.].
Biographical / Historical
Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari (1677-1754) was a composer and instrumentalist. See Grove Music Online for further details.
Custodial History
Previous ownership: signature of 'Chas. Avison' largely erased from the title-page of vol. 2 (p.79), and a cut-out signature is pasted onto the upper pastedown; bookplate of Elborough Woodcock, whose signature 'Elbro Woodcock 1823' also appears on the title-page of vol. 1, which is also in his hand (this title-page is apparently formed from a double-leaf blue wrapper, half of which became the upper pastedown, and half of which was pasted over what was presumably the original title-page); stamp of 'O.U. Music Students Library, Robert Bridges [collection]'.
