'Twelve canticles taken from the compositions of Carlo Clari and adapted to English words selected from the Psalms [by Charles Avison]. Collection the third, Newcastle 1769.' For 2-3 voices with continuo. Ink score, iv + 122 pages, in the hand of Avison, except for pp. 14-28, which are in the same hand as MS. Mus. d. 268, pp. 2-78, probably a relative or pupil.

The first two volumes of this collection are in Newcastle Public Library. Two volumes of Clari's madrigals belonging to Avison, which were evidently the source for his adaptations, are at MSS. Mus. d. 277-278 - they are labelled vols. 3 and 4. The locations of the first two volumes of this set, which Avison presumably also possessed, are unknown. Traced sources are indicated below.

a (pp. 1-13) 1: 'Praise the Lord ye heathen'. For SAB and continuo. Adapted from 'Zeffiretto gentile'.

b (pp. 14-33) 2: 'Preserve me O God'. For SAB and continuo. Adapted from 'Dove, ah dove, o pastori'.

c (pp. 35-44) 3: 'O Lord, be not thou far from me'. For SB and continuo. Adapted from 'Lungi dalla mia bella'.

d (pp. 44-55) 4: 'O Lord, thy word endureth for ever'. For SA and continuo. Adapted from La moglie gelosa ('No soffrir non posso').

f (pp. 72-79) 6: 'Hear thou O Lord my prayer' For SA and continuo. Adapted from 'Vago usignol canoro'.

g (pp. 80-85) 7: 'Teach me O Lord thy statutes'. For SA and continuo. Adapted from ' Volle speranza ardita'.

h (pp. 86-92) 'Blessed be thou O Jehovah'. For SB and continuo. Adapted from Il Pellegrino ('Giro, e rigiro').

i (pp. 93-98) 8: 'O my God look upon me'. For SA and continuo. Adapted from Amante di donna vecchia ('Amor tu me l'hai fatta').
